A Cultural Bridge Between Japan and Europe
Aika Matsuda, Founder of Kanoa
Born and Raised in Japan.
Living in Europe for over two decades.
Through tea, craftsmanship and cultural experiences, I create meaningful connections between Japanese culture and contemporary European life.
My Journey
Japan
Looking back, my connection to tea began long before Kanoa existed.
I was born in Fukuoka, near Yame, one of Japan's most renowned tea-growing regions, and grew up in northern Osaka, close to Kyoto and Uji. Surrounded by places where tea, craftsmanship and seasonal traditions remain part of everyday life, I developed an early appreciation for Japanese culture without fully realising it.
From an early age, I was exposed to both Japanese and Western cultural traditions. I practised Ikebana and Classical Piano, while members of my family dedicated themselves to traditional Japanese arts, architecture and music.
My maternal grandmother, who lived near Yame, had a deep appreciation for Japanese culture. She played the Shamisen, practised Nihon Buyo and, above all, loved Gyokuro. Looking back, I believe my appreciation for tea began with the quiet moments we shared long before Kanoa was founded.
Growing up in this environment shaped my appreciation for craftsmanship, beauty, seasonality and the meaningful rituals that continue to inspire my work today.
My Journey
Europe
At the age of eighteen, I moved alone from Japan to Germany. What began as a personal journey soon became a lifelong exploration of different cultures, perspectives and ways of life.
I later completed a Master's degree at Heidelberg University, specialising in international and comparative education with a strong focus on statistics and analytical research. This academic foundation strengthened my ability to think critically, analyse complex systems and understand the world from multiple perspectives.
Alongside this, I built an international career in business development across European and Asian markets. Working across cultures, languages and industries taught me not only how to build businesses, but also how to build trust and meaningful connections between people.
Today, I see both analytical thinking and cultural sensitivity as equally important. The combination of logical analysis and human intuition continues to shape the way I approach tea, culture and the experiences I create through Kanoa.
Philosophy
Tea as a Gateway to Japanese Culture
For me, tea has never been merely a beverage.
It is one of the most natural ways to experience Japanese culture through all five senses.
Every cup reflects values that have shaped Japanese life for generations — craftsmanship, seasonality, hospitality and a deep respect for nature.
Tea invites us to slow down, become present and discover beauty in everyday moments.
Through Kanoa, I hope to share not only exceptional tea, but also a way of seeing the world that values mindfulness, connection and the quiet richness of everyday life.

A Personal Reflection
Looking Ahead
As technology continues to advance at an extraordinary pace, I have become increasingly aware of the importance of qualities that cannot be measured by data alone: intuition, creativity, human connection and the ability to engage fully with our senses.
Having spent much of my professional life working analytically, this realisation has been especially meaningful to me. It has reminded me that logic and data are essential, but they are only one part of what makes us human.
The more digital our world becomes, the more I find myself valuing experiences that invite presence rather than productivity, depth rather than speed.
Tea is one of them.
It encourages us to slow down, trust our senses and appreciate the beauty of the present moment.
Through Kanoa, I hope to create opportunities for people to reconnect with this part of themselves.
Who I Work With
My work extends beyond tea.
I collaborate with hotels, wellness destinations, creative spaces, galleries, cultural institutions and organisations that wish to create meaningful experiences inspired by Japanese culture.
Whether introducing Japanese tea into hospitality, designing sensory experiences, or exploring how Japanese culture can enrich a service or customer journey, I help translate tradition into experiences that feel authentic, relevant and naturally at home in contemporary Europe.
I work with:
- Hotels, spas, restaurants and cafés seeking distinctive Japanese tea experiences
- Creative spaces, galleries and cultural venues looking for immersive cultural programmes
- Companies wishing to offer moments of presence, reflection and sensory awareness
- Organisations seeking guidance on selecting the right Japanese tea for their guests, customers or teams
- Brands interested in integrating Japanese culture, aesthetics and hospitality into their own experiences
If you would like to explore a collaboration, I would be delighted to hear from you.
