Beyond Matcha: Discover the World of Gyokuro with Kanoa Tea

Europe’s Dedicated Japanese Gyokuro Specialist

Matcha has captured the attention of tea lovers across Europe. Its vibrant green colour, distinctive flavour and cultural heritage have introduced a new generation to Japanese tea.

Yet beyond Matcha lies another extraordinary expression of Japanese tea craftsmanship — Gyokuro.

Celebrated for its remarkable umami, delicate sweetness and exceptional depth, Gyokuro represents one of the most refined traditions in Japanese tea production. Despite its significance in Japan, its true character and diversity remain relatively unexplored in Europe.

This is where Kanoa Tea comes in.

With a distinctive focus on premium Japanese Gyokuro, Kanoa Tea is dedicated to introducing Europe to the remarkable diversity, craftsmanship and culture behind this exceptional tea.

Our ambition goes beyond bringing Japanese tea to Europe. We aim to establish Gyokuro as a category of its own — one that deserves to be discovered, understood and appreciated.

More Than a Japanese Tea Brand

While many Japanese tea brands offer Gyokuro as one variety among many, Kanoa Tea places Gyokuro at the heart of its identity.

Our collection brings together rare, traditionally crafted Handpicked Hon-Gyokuro and innovative GABA Gyokuro, offering an exceptional opportunity to explore the diversity of this remarkable tea.

Different cultivars, harvesting methods and production techniques reveal distinct expressions of Gyokuro — from deep, lingering umami to refreshing sweetness and elegant aromatic complexity.

Much like fine wine, Gyokuro invites exploration beyond a single flavour profile. Each cultivar has its own personality, shaped by the expertise of the producer and the conditions in which it is grown.

At Kanoa Tea, we believe these differences deserve to be experienced, compared and understood.

We don’t simply offer Gyokuro. We specialise in its diversity.

Exceptional Quality Begins in the Tea Garden

Authentic Gyokuro begins long before the leaves are harvested.

One of its defining characteristics is the traditional shading process, which limits sunlight exposure before harvest and influences the development of the tea’s distinctive flavour.

Every Gyokuro in the Kanoa Tea collection is cultivated under traditional Tana-shading structures for 30 days before harvest.

Unlike direct-cover shading methods, Tana-shading uses elevated structures that keep the shading material above the tea plants.

This carefully managed growing environment encourages the retention of amino acids, including L-theanine, which contribute to Gyokuro’s characteristic sweetness and umami.

The result is a tea of remarkable depth and refinement.

For our Handpicked Hon-Gyokuro collection, traditional hand-harvesting adds another dimension of craftsmanship and exclusivity.

Produced in exceptionally limited quantities, these teas reflect the precision, patience and expertise required to create some of Japan’s finest green teas.

For Kanoa Tea, quality is not simply a label. It begins with understanding how each tea is cultivated, harvested and produced.

Where Tradition Meets Innovation

Japanese tea craftsmanship is rooted in centuries of knowledge. Yet tradition and innovation are not opposites.

At Kanoa Tea, they exist side by side.

Alongside our traditional Handpicked Hon-Gyokuro collection, we introduce GABA Gyokuro, developed through a patented production technique by our Japanese tea producer.

This innovative approach brings a new dimension to traditional Gyokuro, demonstrating how advanced tea-processing knowledge can expand the possibilities of an established Japanese tea category.

Our GABA Gyokuro collection offers several distinctive cultivars, each with its own flavour characteristics.

Innovation also extends to how Gyokuro can be enjoyed.

With MATSU, our powdered GABA Gyokuro, we introduce a contemporary way to experience Gyokuro. Unlike traditional leaf infusions, the finely powdered tea is consumed in its entirety and can be prepared simply with water.

From carefully brewed traditional Gyokuro to refreshing cold preparations and innovative powdered formats, we believe this exceptional tea has much more to offer than many European consumers have yet discovered.

Our philosophy is to preserve the integrity of Japanese tea craftsmanship while embracing its future.

Bringing the Culture Behind Gyokuro to Europe

An exceptional tea deserves more than a product description.

Its true value becomes apparent when we understand the people, techniques and traditions behind it — and when we experience how different preparation methods reveal its character.

This is why education and cultural exchange are central to Kanoa Tea.

Through guided tastings, workshops and cultural events, we introduce Gyokuro not only as a premium product but as an experience.

Our close relationship with our Japanese tea producer allows us to share first-hand knowledge of cultivation, production and innovation.

In Paris, for example, we recently brought our tea producer together with European tea enthusiasts for an event exploring the craftsmanship behind Japanese tea. Guests experienced freshly prepared Matcha, premium Gyokuro tastings and traditional Japanese tea culture, including Senchado.

These encounters reflect what makes Kanoa Tea different.

We believe that understanding the origins of a tea, recognising the nuances between cultivars and discovering the influence of brewing techniques can transform the way people appreciate Gyokuro.

Our role is to create that connection between Japanese producers and European tea lovers.

A New Chapter for Gyokuro in Europe

Europe’s appreciation of Japanese tea continues to evolve.

Matcha has already demonstrated how a traditional Japanese tea can find a meaningful place in contemporary European culture.

We believe Gyokuro deserves its own recognition.

Not as an alternative to Matcha, but as an extraordinary category with its own identity, craftsmanship and sensory experience.

Its complexity invites a more thoughtful approach to tea appreciation, where cultivar, origin, production and preparation become part of the experience.

For Kanoa Tea, this represents both an opportunity and a responsibility.

We are committed to building awareness, sharing knowledge and creating opportunities for people to experience authentic Japanese Gyokuro.

We don’t simply bring Gyokuro to Europe. We are building a culture around it.
